Burning without a permit will result in a response from the Fire department and possible fines may be enforced.

Northfield residents may obtain a permit to burn brush outside. Burning season runs from January 15 to May 1st.

Brush Burn Permits are granted on a day to day basis, depending on the current days weather conditions. Permits are granted through the Shelburne Control Dispatch Center. The non-emergency line to call for permits is 413-625-8200.

Once granted burns will start at 10am and must be under control/extinguished by 4pm.

A brush burn means exactly that. It is a permit to burn ordinary brush from your property.

Items that are not to be burned are:
    • Construction materials
    • Lumber
    • Tires
    • Trash
